The mayor of Las Palmas, Augusto Hidalgo, has announced on Wednesday, January 12th, that this year's carnival in the capital will be delayed for two weeks.

Initially, the celebrations were supposed to take place between February 11th and March 6th.

The new date for the start of the 2022 Carnival in Las Palmas will be February 25.

This sudden change is said to have come as a result of the surge in new Covid-19 cases, as the island is currently placed at level 3 alert, along with Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and La Palma, while Tenerife is already at Level 4.

So with stricter restrictions in place in regards to the number of people in a group that can be together in public places and closing times for venues, it would be difficult to celebrate the carnival properly.
