The Tenerife Cabildo has introduced an eco-tax for the Masca Canyon Trail, to manage the growing demand for this popular spot in Teno Rural Park.
Residents of Tenerife can visit for free, Canary Islands residents will pay 3 euros for adults and 1.50 euros for children, while non-residents will pay 28 euros for adults and 14 euros for children, plus tax. The daily visitor limit is set at 275 people.
Cabildo President Rosa Dávila emphasized that this is Tenerife's first eco-tax, aimed at regulating and controlling visits to the Masca Canyon Trail. This initiative was implemented in just two months, thanks to the coordinated efforts of the Natural Environment area. The collected funds will be used for the conservation of Masca Canyon, improving visitor safety and preventing overcrowding, which will help restore the natural beauty of the area.
Vice President Lope Afonso highlighted that 95% of Masca Gorge visitors are tourists, who will now contribute to its maintenance. He also praised the quick implementation of this measure, achieved through the teamwork of various departments.
Counselor Blanca Pérez mentioned collaboration with Masca residents to ensure solutions like the regulation of the trail and the introduction of shuttle buses to prevent traffic congestion and enhance safety. Masca residents will have free access to the trail.
Pedro Millán, Insular Director of Natural Environment, explained that the eco-tax will help manage access and safety. The trail, previously closed for safety reasons, will now offer a better experience for visitors and help preserve the landscape.
Services will initially run on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, with descending trips ending at the sea, and one daily ascending trip at 9 AM. Depending on initial results, the service may expand to daily operations.
