55-year-old woman drowns on beach in Jandía, South of Fuerteventura

A 55-year-old woman has died after drowning at Playa de Esquinzo, in the municipality of Pájara, on the island of Fuerteventura, emergency services confirmed.

The incident occurred on 21 February 2026 at 13:16 local time. According to the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Center (CECOES) 112, a call was received reporting that a person had been pulled from the sea showing signs of drowning while bystanders attempted resuscitation.

Emergency responders were immediately dispatched to the scene, including a basic life support ambulance from the Servicio de Urgencias Canario (SUC), as well as a doctor and nurse from the primary care centre in Morro Jable. Despite efforts by medical personnel, the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Local Police assisted by transporting primary care staff to the location. The Guardia Civil opened the corresponding proceedings pending the arrival of judicial authorities, while firefighters from Pájara supported the emergency response operation.

No further details about the victim have been released.
