The Ministry of Health has agreed this Thursday, August 19, after analyzing the evolution of epidemiological data, that all the islands continue at the same alert level as the previous week.

This decision is based on the report of the General Directorate of Public Health which highlights the downward trend of all pandemic indicators except for stays in ICU beds.

Tenerife and Gran Canaria will continue at level 4; Fuerteventura at level 3; La Palma, Lanzarote and La Graciosa, on level 2; and El Hierro and La Gomera, at level 1. The downward trend of most of the indicators continues, especially in the 7-day AI, which fell 37%.

Notice!

These alert levels and the local traffic lights system in the Canary Islands have nothing to do with UK's own traffic light system.

The Canary Islands also use the traffic lights system to announce the level of local restrictions on each island in the archipelago, based on the rate of new cases registered. This article refers to the local alert level on each island, which is assessed weekly by the Government of the Canary Islands.

Current Alert Levels in the Canary Islands:

  • Alert Level 1: El Hierro, La Gomera
  • Alert Level 2: Lanzarote, La Graciosa, La Palma
  • Alert Level 3: Fuerteventura
  • Alert Level 4: Gran Canaria, Tenerife

The report highlights that 2,460 cases were reported from August 11 to 17, which represents a decrease in the daily average of the number of reported cases of around 37% compared to the previous week. All the islands have followed this pattern, except Lanzarote which has remained stable.

Regarding the characterization of the variants that are circulating in the Canary Islands, according to the data of the last epidemiological week, it is estimated that 89.4% are probable Delta (B.1.617.2), 0.4% Alpha (B .1.1.7) and 0.2 Beta (B.1.351) / Gamma (P1).

COVID-19 hospital occupancy

The number of conventional beds occupied by COVID-19 patients is in decline in the islands, thus in the whole of the Autonomous Community it has gone from a daily average of 339 occupied beds to 291. The percentage of occupancy is at low risk or very low in all the islands except for Tenerife.

However, the number of ICU beds occupied with respect to the previous week continues to increase. The Community as a whole has gone from an average of 100 occupied ICU beds to an average of 106 in the last week. The greatest increase is observed in Gran Canaria with 4 more beds on average occupied compared to the previous week and in Lanzarote with one more occupied bed. Regarding the indicator, the percentage of occupancy in ICUs is at very high risk in Tenerife and at high risk in Gran Canaria and medium in Fuerteventura.

The median age of all people hospitalized for COVID-19 in the last 15 days is 62 years and in the ICU it is 57 years. In addition, 24% of those admitted to the ICU in the last 15 days are between 12 and 39 years old.

It should be noted that of the 253 people admitted to conventional beds in the last two weeks, 64% were without immunization, a figure that in the case of those admitted to the ICU amounts to 81%.
