lanzarote emergency rescue

On November 5, 2024, at approximately 1:49 p.m., an 81-year-old man was found deceased, floating in the sea near Playa Grande, located in Puerto del Carmen in the municipality of Tías on the island of Lanzarote.

The emergency response was initiated when the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Center (CECOES 112) received an alert from a boat operated by EMERLAN, an association of volunteer rescuers in Lanzarote. The crew reported the presence of an unresponsive person in the water in the mentioned area. Acting swiftly, the 1-1-2 service dispatched the necessary emergency resources, including a medicalized ambulance from the Canary Emergency Service (SUC) and a unit of the Guardia Civil.

EMERLAN personnel recovered the body from the sea and transported it to the Varadero pier. There, medical staff in the SUC ambulance confirmed the man’s death. The Guardia Civil maintained custody of the body until the judicial authorities arrived and has begun an investigation to document the circumstances of the incident. Local police also collaborated with the other emergency services at the scene. The details of the case will now be handled by judicial authorities.
