Cabildo de Fuerteventura asks the central Government to review the conditions imposed for British families traveling with children to Spain
The new restrictions imposed on travel from the UK prevent children between the ages of 12 and 17 from entering Spain because they don't have yet the full vaccination scheme, while children from other countries such as Germany or Sweden are allowed to enter with a test.
"This nonsense is causing thousands of cancellations in the Canary Islands and Fuerteventura," warns the counselor Jessica de León.
The Tourism Council of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura led by Jessica de León asks the Government of Spain to review the health measures that apply to travelers from the United Kingdom that prevent British children between 12 and 17 years old who do not have the complete vaccination scheme, which is causing cancellations on the island and which has caused tour operators such as Jet2 to cancel all the reservations to the Canary Islands that included children between these ages.
This request is supported by the president of the Cabildo, Sergio Lloret López, who points out that all the necessary efforts are being made from the tourism sector and from the public institutions of Fuerteventura to guarantee the safety of tourists and visitors, as the island's economy depends on tourism.
The Minister of Tourism, Jessica de León, asks the Government of Spain for consistency since "this decision is not based on health, but politics" since children from countries such as Germany or Sweden are allowed to enter with only negative antigen tests. “We ask the same for the United Kingdom because this nonsense is weighing on the tourist and economic recovery, further complicating the return of tourists from our second source market with the serious damage that this entails at an economic level for areas such as Corralejo or Caleta de Fuste”.
De León joins the requests of the tourist associations in the Canary Islands and Fuerteventura and, in addition, recalls that what is requested "is not that there are no controls, but that they be applied with common sense" to everyone because "the tourism sector has always been the first to respect the rules and complies every day with all the necessary protocols, which have served to identify Fuerteventura as a safe destination despite the thousands of tourists we have received in recent months”.
The counselor recalls that 330,000 international tourists arrived in Fuerteventura in November compared to 169,000 who arrived in November 2019 and that during the months of September and October the figures provided by AENA predicted a good winter equaling 2019 "thanks to the recovery of connectivity with the main source countries. However, this type of measure together with the Omicron variant and the insular health situation itself is putting the winter season at risk ”.
In this sense, the Minister of Tourism once again asks for individual responsibility and that we make an effort on the island to comply with the sanitary measures.
