Calima warning: Saharan dust will affect the Canary Islands this Sunday

Aemet Canarias has issued an alert warning about the presence of Saharan dust in suspension over the Canary Islands this Sunday, January 9, 2022.

According to Aemet, the calima will significantly reduce visibility, mainly in coastal areas and in the southern parts of the islands.  Locally there will be very strong gusts of wind in El Golfo, north and west of La Gomera, and in the west part of the Metropolitan Area of Tenerife.

Weather prediction for Sunday, January 9th - Canary Islands

Intervals of medium and high clouds, with a low probability of weak and occasional precipitation in the evening in high areas of the mountainous islands.

The presence of calima can significantly reduce visibility, mainly in low areas and southern slopes.

Minimum temperatures with hardly be affected, while the maximum can decrease slightly in the eastern islands and they can be slightly increased in the western islands.

The wind will blow from east to southeast with strong intervals, more intense in the midlands and peaks. Locally very strong gusts in El Golfo, north and west of La Gomera and west part of the Metropolitan Area of Tenerife, without being ruled out in inland areas of Gran Canaria.
