Canary Islands affected by the intense calima as the haze causes problems at airports

As predicted by Aemet a few days ago, an important episode of calima is currently affecting the Canary Islands, reducing visibility and causing problems at some of the airports.

Gran Canaria airport was until now the most affected by the suspended dust, with horizontal visibility of just 3,700 meters, according to the statement by Aemet on their Twitter profile.

The air quality is also affected by the presence of dust in the air, as the measured levels of PM10 and PM25 particles put the air quality in the "Unhealthy" category, while in Fuerteventura the levels are even higher and the air quality is even worse.

According to the local government, the severe haze on Tuesday 27 will reduce visibility below 1,500m in some areas, while the concentrations will be generalized between 640 – 1240 micrograms of dust per m3 of air.

The episode of severe calima is expected to last on Wednesday as well, with similar bad air quality and reduced visibility.
