Following the recent impact of Storm Dorothea, the Canary Islands are preparing for another bout of severe weather as a High-Level Isolated Depression (DANA) is set to affect the region in the coming days.

The Spanish Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has warned that the phenomenon will bring widespread rainfall, significant drops in temperature, and intensified winds across parts of the archipelago.

Unstable Weather Forecasted

Aemet’s forecast for Monday indicates that while stable, anticyclonic conditions are expected over mainland Spain, fronts approaching from the north will bring increased cloud cover to northern areas. The Canary Islands, however, will experience more instability due to the DANA, with abundant rainfall anticipated in the western islands, though the eastern islands are less likely to see significant precipitation.

Saturday: The Start of Unstable Weather

Saturday’s weather will feature periods of cloud cover evolving into overcast skies with scattered rain showers. Aemet has not ruled out the possibility of locally heavy downpours, particularly in northern Tenerife, La Palma, and Gran Canaria, where isolated thunderstorms may also occur.

Temperatures are set to drop, with highs not exceeding 21°C in Santa Cruz de Tenerife and 20°C in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Northeasterly winds will be strong, with very strong gusts expected on the southeastern and northwestern slopes of the western islands during the early hours.

Intensification on Sunday

The DANA will intensify on Sunday, bringing heavier rainfall primarily to the western islands. Precipitation levels could be substantial in mid-altitude and mountainous areas, with the potential for snowfall in high-altitude regions such as Mount Teide and Roque de los Muchachos due to cooler temperatures at higher elevations.

Temperatures will continue to decline, with lows of 15°C expected in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and 17°C in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. While winds will remain strong in exposed areas, a reduction in wind intensity is likely in the eastern province by the afternoon, accompanied by a shift to more variable wind directions.
