Aemet has elevated the warning level to orange alert due to extremely high temperatures in the Canary Islands over the weekend.

On Friday, the orange alert will be in place only on the island of Gran Canaria, while Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Gomera and Tenerife will be placed under yellow alert.

Maximum temperatures will reach up to 37 ºC in Gran Canaria and up to 34 ºC in the rest of the islands. Gran Canaria is also placed under alert on Friday and Saturday due to low visibility, of a maximum of 3000 m, due to suspended dust (calima).

On Saturday, the orange alert will be in place in Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Gomera and Tenerife, while El Hierro and La Palma will be under yellow alert due to extreme heat.

In some areas of Gran Canaria, maximum temperatures could reach up to 40 ºC, while in the rest of the archipelago high temperatures of up to 37 ºC are expected on Saturday.
