Are you planning a holiday in the Canary Islands in September and you're wondering how the weather is? From our experience, September is one of the best months to visit the Canary Islands and it's actually one of our favorites months to come over.

Why is September such a great time to visit the Canaries?

First of all, the weather is just great: really warm, but not too hot. Then, the sea is also hotter than in summer, the wind is less strong and there are fewer crowds than during the school holidays.

What's the weather like in the Canary Islands in September

In September there are usually around 28°C during the daytime but it usually feels much hotter than that, because the UV index is still very high, so make sure to use sun lotion with 50 SPF.

Average temperatures for the islands during the month of September.

These temperatures can vary slightly, especially in the mountainous regions of Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma and La Gomera, where the temperatures can vary compared to the temperatures on the coast.

Tenerife South

  • Average high temperature: 27.9°C (82.2°F)
  • Average low temperature: 21.1°C (70.0°F)
  • Daily mean: 24.5°C (76.1°F)

Gran Canaria (Airport)

  • Average high temperature: 27.2°C  (81.0°F)

Lanzarote

  • Average low temperature: 20.8°C  (69.4°F)

  • Average low temperature: 21.2°C (70.2°F)
  • Daily mean: 24.4°C (75.9°F)

Keep in mind that these are the number from the weather stations at the airports, so it depends on the location of the airport on each island. In general, the temperatures are very similar between the islands.

Rainfall

September still feels like summer in the Canary Islands and the month of September is still pretty dry, with only 1 wet day on average. 

So it is highly unlikely that it will rain during your September holiday in the Canaries, especially if you're staying in the south of the island, in the case of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, the islands that tend to get more rain than Lanzarote or Fuerteventura.

Sea temperature

It seems that and Gran Canaria has the highest water temperature in September. 

The water temperature in September is still on the rise, before reaching its peak temperature in October.

Can you swim in the Canary Islands in September?

Yes, you can definitely swim in September, since the ocean water will actually be warmer than it was during the summer months.

If you're visiting Fuerteventura in September, you can take advantage of the big tides that take place during this month to visit the caves in Puertito de Los Molinos, which are pretty amazing. 

Which Canary Island is hottest in September?

Based on temperatures, Lanzarote is the hottest Canary Island in September, but the temperatures are very similar across all the Canary Islands.

In Tenerife and Gran Canaria, the resorts are mostly located in the south region of the islands, where the climate is always warmer and drier than in the north. 

Rain won't bother you very much in September, so if you want to escape the rain back home, come to the Canaries at the beginning of autumn, when it's still dry and hot.

In general, keep in mind that the weather in the Canary Islands is pretty similar, especially when comparing Tenerife south with the south of Gran Canaria, while the climate in the mountain regions can vary.

September is a great month for hiking in the Canaries since it's not as hot as it was back in August, so you'll be able to endure the heat easier.
