This Friday, May 23, Caleta de Fuste, the popular resort in Fuerteventura, will come alive with the spirit of the Canary Islands as it hosts the Muestra de Costumbres Canarias (Exhibition of Canarian Traditions), starting at 5:30 PM in the Plaza de El Castillo.
Organized by the Antigua Town Hall through its Department of Tourism, the event promises a vibrant celebration of Canarian heritage through music, food, and traditional activities.
A major highlight of the event is the exhibition of lucha canaria, the traditional Canarian wrestling, by the current and three-time champions of the Canary Islands, CL Unión Antigua. This team is one of the most prominent ambassadors of the island's native sport, representing both Fuerteventura and the broader Canary Islands.
The cultural showcase will feature performances from several renowned folk groups, including Parranda El Callao, Agrupación Folklórica de Tetir El Rincón, and Cinco en Clave with Timbeque, offering authentic Canarian music and dance throughout the evening.
Visitors will also enjoy a local craft market, traditional games, and a unique show cooking session led by Francisco “El Molinero,” who will prepare iconic Canarian dishes such as pellas de gofio and classic regional sweets. Additionally, attendees will have the chance to taste a variety of local delicacies during a Canarian food tasting.
Another special feature of the event is the exhibition of the Burro Majorero, a native donkey breed known for its sturdy build and distinctive short, thick coat—a living symbol of the island's agricultural past.
“The Muestra de Costumbres Canarias allows both residents and tourists to immerse themselves in the rich cultural traditions of our islands,” said Antigua’s mayor, Matías Peña. “It is a moment to celebrate our identity and share it with visitors, who are currently filling our hotels to more than 90% occupancy.”
Tourism Councillor Kristina Rodewig emphasized that the event not only showcases traditional culture but also supports local businesses by encouraging foot traffic to nearby restaurants, bars, and shops. “The Plaza de El Castillo will be the heart of Canarian tradition, filled with local products, music, and joyful experiences for all ages,” she added.
With its lively schedule of performances, food, and traditional fun, the Muestra de Costumbres Canarias is set to be an unforgettable celebration of island life in Caleta de Fuste.
