Christmas weather in the Canary Islands: mix of rain, calima and strong wind

Aemet has just activated the first yellow warnings for Christmas day in the Canary Islands, due to intense rain that is expected to fall on the islands of La Palma, Tenerife, El Hierro and La Gomera.

According to Aemet, the rain will be more persistent in the north of these islands, while a drop in temperatures is also expected.

Starting from Monday, December 26, a significant amount of calima is also expected to affect the archipelago, but especially the easternmost islands of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote. 

On Monday the snow level will probably be at around 2,200 meters so during this day the precipitation could be in the form of snow on the peaks of Tenerife and La Palma.

In the eastern islands, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the weather will be slightly cloudy or clear with intervals of high clouds, and with a light calima.

In the western islands, cloudy intervals in the early hours, while the sky will be become cloudy later in the day, with light to moderate rains, more abundant in the afternoon and locally persistent in northern areas.

Temperatures will slightly decrease, especially in the midlands and high areas of mountainous islands, and especially in La Palma. Light to moderate south wind, turning to strong wind on the peaks of La Palma and Tenerife.

On Sunday there is a yellow warning for rain in place for the islands of La Palma, El Hierro, Tenerife and La Gomera.

In Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the day will start slightly cloudy, while in the rest of the islands, cloudy or covered with light to moderate rains, locally persistent in northern areas, which could be occasional showers accompanied by storms.

Light calima in the eastern islands, increasing notably in the afternoon, especially in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

On these islands, the minimum temperatures will rise slightly, while the maximum temperatures will drop slightly. 

In the eastern islands, moderate southerly wind with strong intervals, and with gusts of very strong wind in Lanzarote. In Tenerife and La Gomera, light to moderate south wind, more intense and from the southwest in high areas.
