An active cold front will affect the Canary Islands on Christmas Eve (December 24) and Christmas Day (December 25), bringing periods of rain and unsettled weather, according to Spain’s State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).
The front, which will also impact mainland Spain, is expected to bring generally light to moderate rainfall across the archipelago. However, Aemet warns that rainfall could become locally heavy in the north of the more mountainous islands, as well as in the westernmost islands.
Weather forecast for Christmas Eve
The outlook for Christmas Eve points to increasing instability, especially during the second half of the day. Aemet has warned of very strong northwesterly wind gusts in the high-altitude areas of Tenerife, with wind strength expected to intensify as the day progresses.
During the morning, cloudy intervals are forecast in the north of the mountainous islands and in the eastern islands, while clearer skies are expected across the rest of the archipelago. By late afternoon, however, cloud cover is set to increase, with cloudy or overcast skies developing, particularly on northern and western slopes and in Lanzarote.
Rainfall on Christmas Eve is expected to be light to moderate overall, though it could become locally heavier and more persistent in northern Tenerife. In southern-facing areas, rain will be less likely and generally lighter.
Temperatures are forecast to remain stable, with maximums reaching up to 22°C in both of the Canary Islands’ provincial capitals.
