Could the volcanic eruption in La Palma affect flights to the other Canary Islands?

After the volcanic eruption started on La Palma on Sunday, September 19th, 2021, many people have been wondering if this event could impact flights coming or going from the other Canary Islands.

First of all, please keep in mind that this is a natural event of proportions, that has destroyed hundreds of homes on the island of La Palma and thousands of residents had to be evacuated from the path of the burning lava. 

So, while having a canceled flight might not be the most pleasant thing to happen after the time we've all had, let's be a bit considerate and think first of all the people who have lost a lot more than a holiday as a consequence of this volcanic eruption.

Could holidays to Tenerife, Gran Canaria, or the other Canary Islands be impacted by the eruption on La Palma?

Short answer: at the moment there is no indication that holidays to the other Canary Islands could be impacted by the eruption.

Long answer:

The air space in the Canary Islands is open and flights are operating normally.

ENAIRE, Spain's air navigation manager, has announced on September 21st, 2 days after the eruption had started, that by 2:00 pm that day, 349 flights had been operated in the Canary Islands, without being affected by the activity of the Cumbre Vieja volcano.

While many people still recall that thousands of passengers have had their flights cancelled due to the drifting ash from the eruption of the volcano in Iceland in 2011, there is no indication currently that this could happen as a consequence of the eruption in La Palma.
