A couple had to be rescued last night outside the natural pool of Charco de Isla Cangrejo, located in Los Gigantes, in the municipality of Santiago del Teide (Tenerife), after facing life-threatening conditions.
The Maritime Rescue helicopter, Helimer, was dispatched to save a person showing signs of drowning, according to a report by the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Center (1-1-2).
The rescue operation was launched following an alert that two swimmers were in distress. One of them, a woman, managed to reach safety on her own and was attended to by Tenerife Firefighters. She was assessed by paramedics from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) after sustaining minor injuries, which did not require her to be transported to a hospital.
The man, however, had to be evacuated by helicopter to Tenerife South Airport, where an SUC ambulance took over. He was then transferred to Hospiten Sur University Hospital with symptoms of drowning.
The local police and the Civil Guard were also involved, documenting the incident and assisting in the operation.
