Covid-19 measures for New Year's Eve in the Canary Islands

On the islands of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, El Hierro (green traffic light) and La Gomera (yellow traffic light), meetings may not exceed ten people, except cohabitants, and circulation is limited between 01:30 to 06:00 am on January 1. In Tenerife (red traffic light) the meetings may not exceed 6 people, except cohabitants, and the movement of people is limited between 01:00 and 06:00 am.

Hotels and restaurants and bars must close at 00:00 in the islands that are on the green traffic light and at 23:00 in Tenerife and La Gomera

The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands reminds the population of the need to take precautions and the duty to comply with the measures in force during the New Year's Eve parties in order to minimize the risk of new infections and transmission of the virus.

It is also recalled that preventive measures are in force until January 10 and they are different throughout the territory of the Canaries, depending on the alert levels established (1, 2 and 3), although the basic recommendations remain in place everywhere, like the mandatory use of masks, ventilation of spaces, interpersonal safety distance and hand hygiene.

According to the latest epidemiological report from the General Directorate of Public Health of the Canary Islands Health Service, the islands of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma and El Hierro are at Level 1 (green traffic light); the island of La Gomera is on Level 2 (yellow traffic light) and the island of Tenerife is on Level 3 (red traffic light).

In the five islands which are in Alert Level 1 (green traffic light), the New Year's Eve celebrations may not exceed the maximum number of 10 people, except in the case of cohabitants, with the recommendation not to exceed two groups from different households.

On islands under the green traffic light, the curfew will be in place from 1:30 to 06:00 on January 1.

Parties, open-air festivals and other popular events that involve big crowds of people are not allowed.

Lunches or dinners in hotels and restaurants can take place both indoors and in outdoor spaces or terraces, without exceeding 75% of the authorized capacity indoors. The distance has to be at least 2 meters between adjacent table chairs and the maximum occupancy at a table is 6 people. Customers in these establishments must remain seated all the time, limiting movement to what is strictly necessary.

Activities that encourage not maintaining interpersonal safety distance and the use of masks are prohibited, such as parties, festivals, dances, karaoke. Smoking on terraces or other outdoor spaces depending on the establishment is banned.

Bars and restaurants must close for the public at 00:00 hours and the curfew starts at 01:30 a.m.

Measures in force in La Gomera (Yellow traffic light)

On the island of La Gomera, at Alert Level 2 (yellow traffic light), the established preventive measures include the recommendation to leave the home only as much as necessary and avoid closed spaces, where there are many people and where the use of masks is not possible.

Rules in the case of lunches or dinners in hotels, bars and restaurants: no more than 75% of the authorized capacity in outdoor terraces or 50% in indoor spaces may be exceeded. These establishments must close to the public at 23:00.

Measures in force in Tenerife (Red traffic light)

On the island of Tenerife, with Alert Level 3 (red traffic light) and specific measures extended by the Government from December 29 to January 10, social and family celebrations on December 31 and January 1 are restricted to a maximum of 6 people, unless they are cohabiting. It is recommended that people from a maximum of 2 households meet together.

It is recommended to leave the home only what is necessary and avoid closed spaces, where there are many people and where the use of masks is not possible.

Curfew in Tenerife on New Year's Eve is established between 01:00 and 06:00.

In the case of lunches or dinners in hotels and restaurants, only outdoor spaces or terraces can be used and with a maximum capacity of 50%, maximum occupancy of 4 people per table and the premises have to close at 23:00 hours.

In the case of lunches or dinners in tourist accommodation establishments, the use of the interior areas is allowed, with a maximum capacity of 33%, and exclusively for guests staying in that accommodation.
