Covid certificate will be mandatory in the Canary Islands starting from December 25th on islands at level 3 or 4

The Superior Court of Justice of the Canary Islands (TSJC) has decided to ratify the implementation of the COVID certificate in the Canary Islands, which means that its use will be mandatory, for all sectors that are subject to capacity restrictions or schedules on the islands that are at alert levels 3 and 4.

This measure will come into effect starting from Saturday, December 25th.

Currently, the islands which are placed at level 3 are Tenerife, Gran Canaria and Fuerteventura and there is no Canary Island placed at level 4 right now. 

This measure will be in place initially for a month, while it will be subject to monitoring and evaluation, in order to establish if it will be extended based on the evolution of the epidemiological situation.

The entry into force of the mandatory certificate for establishments and activities subject to hourly and capacity limits on the islands at levels 3 and 4 does not allow them to benefit from applying lower level measures, as was the case when the use of the covid certificate was voluntary.

What does that mean

It means that in order to access establishments like bars, restaurants or gyms, it will be mandatory to show the Covid certificate which proves that you are either fully vaccinated, have a negative Covid-19 test result from within the last 48 hours, or have proof of overcoming the disease in the last 6 months.

Establishments will have to verify the validity of the certificate by using an app that does not store personal health data after reading the QR code. 

Establishments, facilities or activities for public use for which access will require accreditation

Which places will need to verify the Covid certificate in the Canary Islands

• Hotel and restaurants which have a capacity of more than 30 people.
• Nightlife establishments and activities, which have a capacity of more than 30 people
• Establishments and spaces dedicated to recreational and chance activities, with a capacity of more than 30 people, or any other place of this type, regardless of its capacity, which allows the consumption of food
• Events and celebrations with a concentration of people and music festivals attended by more than 500 people, as well as in other events where, regardless of their capacity, the consumption of food or drink is allowed.
• Sporting events attended by more than 500 people, as well as in other events where, regardless of their capacity, the consumption of food or drink is allowed.
• Gyms
• Health establishments and centers for visits to admitted patients, as well as to accompany someone to a consultation, diagnostic tests.

The Covid certificate will be required in open and closed spaces

The Covid certificate will be required for access both to open spaces, as well as to closed spaces pertaining to the establishments mentioned above. 

Voluntary Covid Certificate for the islands on levels 1 and 2

The Ministry of Health recalls that the Order of the Minister of Health, also ratified by the TSJC, which establishes the use of the covid certificate on a voluntary basis in establishments and activities subject to limits, continues to be in force for islands that are in levels 1 and 2 capacity and schedules.

The voluntary implementation of the certificate allows them to apply measures of a lower level than that of the island in question.
