On Thursday, September 26, the Canary Islands government will conduct a test of the emergency alert system, ES-Alert, across Gran Canaria.

This system sends emergency messages directly to people's mobile phones to keep them informed during disasters like fires, floods, or severe weather.

The test, organized by the Directorate of Emergencies and CECOES 112, will involve local authorities and will take place between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM. People may receive the alert when it’s sent or as they enter mobile coverage areas. Phones that are off or in airplane mode won't receive it. Coastal areas of Tenerife and Fuerteventura might also receive the alert due to mobile antenna range.

The message will disappear after being accepted, and recipients can complete a survey to assess the test's effectiveness. It's important for drivers not to panic but to stop safely to read and accept the message. The alert will also be available in English if your phone is set to that language.

This system, tested across other Canary Islands, aims to keep the public safe during emergencies without needing any additional apps or registration. It complements other communication channels like social media, radio, and public announcements.
