Playa de famara lanzarote
Playa de Famara is a top surfer's beach in Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain)

Famara beach is located on the northwest coast of Lanzarote and provides one of the most epic sceneries on the island, with the Risco de Famara cliffs in the backdrop.

Lanzarote is home to several first-class beaches and Famara is certainly one of them; it is an impressive place, due to the natural scenery with the giant cliffs keeping guard to this majestic beach.

Caleta de Famara - a quiet place in Lanzarote

See what to do in Caleta de Famara, the small town seen in the distance from Famara Beach

A few kilometers away from the beach you'll find a charming place called Caleta de Famara, where you can enjoy a lovely meal of fresh fish in a local setting - no fancy bars or restaurants here. Caleta de Famara is the nearby small town, located right next to Famara beach.

Cesar Manrique used to spend his summers here as a teenager and it's easy to understand why. Caleta de Famara is located in a beautiful natural space and the atmosphere is very different from the big resorts like Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise or Playa Blanca.

Caleta de Famara is not your typical Lanzarote resort; it does not have big hotels, with lots of pools, sunbeds and cocktail bars. Instead, it's a laid-back place, somewhat with a hippie vibe, a place where many surfers come to stay during their visit to Lanzarote. This is the reason why you won't find any premium accommodation here, instead, you will mostly find apartments and studios, ideal for a budget-friendly self-catering holiday in Lanzarote. So private rentals are your best bet and you can find some great options on Airbnb.

Caleta de Famara is a good place to visit if you want to eat fresh fish in Lanzarote. You will find some nice and cozy restaurants that serve some of the freshest fish on the island, with local recipes and ingredients, nothing too fancy, but tasty and reasonably priced.

Restaurante El Risco and Restaurante Sol are some of the most popular restaurants in Caleta de Famara, but El Chiringuito is also a good choice if you're looking for an authentic Canary Islands restaurant.

Famara beach - best beach for surfing in Lanzarote

Famara beach, with its 4 km of fine sand, is popular among water sports lovers thanks to the swell of the waves and the constant winds, which make it ideal for kitesurfing, windsurfing and surfing.

Swimming is not recommended at this beach, because the currents are strong and most of the people you'll see battling the waves are experimented surfers who know how to ride the waves.

You'll also see many surfing schools at Famara beach, as this is the best place for surfing in Lanzarote.

Famara beach is a great place to visit while in Lanzarote even if you're not into watersports, just for the amazing scenery and the sunsets, which are always breathtaking. However, this beach is not ideal for those who just want to lounge in the sun all day long, as the wind blows constantly and you will get slapped with sand, which is not pleasant. Also, there's no sun loungers or umbrellas as this beach, as most visitors come here for the waves, not for chilling on the beach.

Sunset at Famara beach, simply spectacular

Since it's situated on the west coast, Famara beach offers a great spectacle of colors at sunset.

The sunset at Famara Beach is probably the best sunset in Lanzarote.

Most tourists will leave the beach before sunset hour, as most of them are visiting from other resorts, so they would have left to return to their accommodation.

With the Risco de Famara cliffs in the background, watching the sunset on the beach is a great experience while in Lanzarote.
