Fuerteventura shows the second-largest increase in the Canary Islands in terms of tourism demand from the British market. Airlines and tour operators also agree that the island is a favorite choice for Brits during the winter season.

After tourism stopped last year due to the pandemic, Fuerteventura now attends the most important tourism fair in the United Kingdom, the World Travel Market 2021, with an entire agenda full of meetings to promote the Majorero destination in the British market, mainly for next year.

According to the data provided by the Tourism Department of the Canary Islands Government, it seems that Fuerteventura is the second island with the highest growth this winter in the British market, with 9.4% more tourists (only behind Lanzarote, which grows 10.4%). This means that in the 2021/2022 winter season, 286,656 tourists from the United Kingdom are expected to arrive in Fuerteventura, which is 24,715 more than in the 2019/2020 season.

In the words of the president of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura, Sergio Lloret López, “for us, it was very important to be present at the World Travel Market because, after the effort to guarantee the reactivation of tourism, we can ensure that air connectivity shows positive data with figures that show a 10% increase compared to 2019 for British tourism. It is a very important piece of information, especially for the north of the island, a piece of information that we hope to consolidate with the effort being made by the Tourist Board and the Cabildo itself together with the tourism sector. We are sure that this winter campaign will be the turning point in the economic recovery ”.

This growth is due to the fact that Fuerteventura is a well-known destination within the British market, but also because of the island's good climate since the Canary Islands are the best destination for winter sun in Europe.

Also, Fuerteventura has shown good control of the pandemic and the authorities are constantly trying to guarantee that Fuerteventura is a safe destination. "The British market likes Fuerteventura and this is what the different tour operators and airlines with whom we have met on this first day of the fair have made this known," said the Minister of Tourism, Jessica de León. “We have perfect conditions to welcome tourists all year round, as our motto 'Fuerteventura, open all year round' clearly reflects; But, far from being optimistic, we prefer to continue working with intensity to guarantee connectivity with the island and to continue offering a quality product such as our tourist destination ”.

During the first day of the fair, in addition to receiving the visit of the Minister of Tourism of the Government of the Canary Islands, Yaiza Castilla, and the Minister of Tourism, Reyes Maroto, at the Fuerteventura counter, both the president of the Cabildo and the island councilor The Tourism Board held meetings with the companies Jet2, Ryanair, Bravo Tours and Last Minute, among others, to strengthen relations between the British market and Fuerteventura, as well as follow up on the co-marketing agreements established with the Tourism Board of the island.
