Gran Canaria and La Palma move to Alert Level 4

It was just announced today, January 18th, that the islands of Gran Canaria and La Palma will move to Alert Level 4 starting from Saturday, January 22.

This means that currently, the alert levels in the Canary Islands are the following:

  • Level 1:  -
  • Level 2: El Hierro, La Gomera
  • Level 3: Lanzarote,  Fuerteventura 
  • Level 4:  Tenerife, La Palma, Gran Canaria

The change in alert level on both islands will come into force at 00:00 on Saturday, January 22.

The Ministry adopts this extraordinary decision after the Public Health report that warns of the increases in the occupation of beds, both conventional and ICU, which have risen to very high risk in Gran Canaria. 

The alert levels for the islands of Gran Canaria and La Palma have been updated earlier than the usual evaluation on Thursday due to the unfavorable evolution of their epidemiological indicators. In this way, Gran Canaria and La Palma will go to level 4 of health alert from 00:00 next Saturday, January 22.

Evolution of the pandemic in Gran Canaria

Today's report from the General Directorate of Public Health values ​​that in the case of Gran Canaria, which already had, in the last review, the Cumulative Incidence indicators at 7 and 14 days as well as those related to the incidence in people over 65 years at very high risk has experienced a worsening relation to hospital capacity care.

The percentage of occupancy of conventional beds (15.58%) and critical care (26.43%) has been progressively rising, reaching a very high risk level.

Evolution in La Palma

In the case of La Palma, which has been at alert level 3 since January 7, the indicators for people over 65 are at a high risk level. 

Occupancy in conventional beds rised in one week, from a medium to very high risk level (with 15.76%), although the occupancy of ICUs remains at a very low-risk level (3.85%).
