The Urban Planning Department of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana City Council has approved the construction of a new shopping center on Avenida de Gáldar, at the former site of Viajes Insular.
The project, driven by Isla del Paraíso 200 S.L., marks a significant milestone in the local economic development. The new commercial space will span more than 60,000 m², with an investment of 48 million euros and a construction period of two and a half years, according to Davinia Ramírez, the Urban Planning Councilor.
Alejandro Marichal: “The project will generate over 520 jobs, boosting the local economy and creating a modern leisure infrastructure that will strengthen our position as a top tourist destination.”
Alejandro Marichal, the First Deputy Mayor, emphasized the economic impact of the project, stating that “more than 520 direct and indirect jobs will be created during the construction and operation phases, particularly in the construction sector and related trades, providing a significant economic boost to the area.” Marichal also noted that the project represents a milestone in the commercial and economic development of the municipality, creating new leisure infrastructure that will enhance Maspalomas Costa Canaria’s standing as a tourist destination. “This will have a significant impact on local employment, offering new job opportunities for our residents,” he added.
The design of the shopping center prioritizes sustainability and accessibility, adhering to urban and environmental regulations. The building will be centered around a plaza at street level on Alcalde Enrique Jorge Street. This plaza will be covered by a large patio that expands as the floors rise.
The building will have four floors. The ground floor will house shops, management offices, a central corridor, stairs, and shared areas such as facilities and services. The semi-basement will also feature commercial spaces and shared facilities, while the mezzanine level will host technical services. Below ground, there will be additional retail spaces, storage areas, a recycling zone, technical facilities, shared services, and access ramps. The underground level will also include a parking area with 864 spaces, complete with services and access ramps. Overall, the center will utilize both above-ground and underground spaces, providing ample parking and storage.
Davinia Ramírez: “The shopping center will cover over 60,000 m², involve an investment of 48 million euros, and will be completed within two and a half years.”
In addition to the 30 direct jobs for management, security, cleaning, and maintenance, the commercial units are expected to generate 490 indirect jobs. This includes 110 positions in the hypermarket and 380 in the retail stores within the shopping center.
Marichal reaffirmed the City Council's commitment to modernizing Playa del Inglés, highlighting that the Urban Planning Department continues to invest in infrastructure to enhance the area's appeal as one of the top tourist destinations in the Canary Islands. The approval of this construction license further demonstrates the municipality’s dedication to sustainable development and economic diversification.
