The Guardia Civil in Lanzarote, as part of Operation Virginia, recently detained a 36-year-old individual on October 25, suspected of committing a series of thefts and burglaries.
The arrest brought clarity to 20 criminal incidents involving break-ins and thefts across four hotels in the Playa Blanca-Yaiza area, amounting to an estimated total loss of €25,000.
The investigation began when the Guardia Civil at the Yaiza station noticed a spike in theft and burglary reports within their jurisdiction, peaking in the previous week with nearly one criminal incident reported daily. Through forensic inspections, it was determined that the suspect frequently accessed properties by scaling walls, some over two meters high, and sometimes breaking windows or sliding doors to enter. In other cases, he took advantage of unlocked doors and open windows to steal from hotel rooms and apartments.
Due to the severity of the situation, the Guardia Civil intensified surveillance in affected areas, closely monitoring complexes that had reported multiple incidents. On October 18, the suspect was caught mid-theft as he entered an apartment by climbing a shared wall. The thief even ascended an internal staircase, coming face-to-face with a resident on the upper floor, prompting him to flee, leaving behind a bag filled with stolen goods from prior break-ins.
This discovery helped authorities establish a connection between the various crimes occurring in Playa Blanca, confirming that they were likely the work of a single individual. The suspect, a known offender with a history of similar crimes, had recently completed a significant prison sentence for previous offenses, explaining his initial inactivity before this latest spree.
Further evidence was gathered by analyzing footage from security cameras in the affected areas. The videos revealed a man entering homes with a plastic bag, attempting to evade camera view yet recognized unmistakably by investigators. Cross-referencing with other nearby security cameras confirmed that his attire matched the description of the clothing worn during the burglaries, aligning the suspect with the locations and times of the crimes.
Based on this evidence, the Guardia Civil secured a warrant to search the suspect’s residence on October 25. During the search, they seized clothing identical to that seen in the security footage, as well as numerous stolen items, later identified by multiple victims. This strengthened the case against the suspect, resulting in his immediate arrest.
The detainee was subsequently brought before a judge, who ordered his imprisonment. The Guardia Civil continues the investigation, aiming to identify and return the remaining recovered property to its rightful owners.
