La Oliva will host a new pilot project using drones for maritime rescue and beach surveillance, thanks to a collaboration between the local council and the Government of the Canary Islands. The initiative aims to enhance safety along the municipality’s coastline through early detection and rapid response to potential hazards.

The project, led by the regional Emergency Services and supported by La Oliva’s town hall, will test the viability of drone-assisted monitoring on beaches. Drones will be used to detect dangerous currents, pollution, jellyfish swarms, and unidentified objects, while also spotting marine animals that may pose a risk or require attention.

In addition to environmental monitoring, the drones will support lifeguards by expanding coverage and improving reaction times during incidents. The initial phase will last 12 months and may also be extended to other municipalities in Fuerteventura if successful.

Mayor Isaí Blanco emphasized that the project not only enhances beach safety but also contributes to preserving the island's natural environment. Regional Emergency Services head Manuel Miranda highlighted the program as an example of using technology to improve public safety across all territories, including remote areas.

Lola García, president of the Cabildo of Fuerteventura, welcomed the initiative and stressed the importance of innovation serving both people and nature. She noted that Fuerteventura is already a leader in applying technology to public services through its Tech Park initiatives.
