In a significant move to enhance public mobility and promote sustainability, the Lanzarote Island Council, in collaboration with the public transport concessionaire Arrecife Bus SL, has unveiled a new fleet of 13 hybrid buses.
This expansion will bring nearly 600 additional intercity trips each week, with a strong focus on improving connections in the southern part of the island.
The initiative, officially presented today is part of an ongoing commitment to provide more sustainable, accessible, and efficient transport options for both residents and visitors. “The addition of these buses allows us to continue advancing our commitment to more sustainable, accessible, and efficient mobility for all those who live and visit the island,” said Oswaldo Betancort, president of the Lanzarote Island Council. “We continue to take firm steps, even in a context marked by the ongoing tender for the service, because we understand that the needs of our citizens cannot wait.”
New Strategic Lines and Expanded Services
Starting May 1, three new strategic lines will be introduced to enhance connectivity across key regions:
In addition to the new routes, frequencies will increase on high-demand lines linking Costa Teguise, Arrecife, Playa Honda, Puerto del Carmen, and Playa Blanca. In total, 582 additional weekly trips will be added to the network.
“The new buses make possible the creation of these three new strategic lines, as well as the increase in frequency on the main routes,” said Miguel Ángel Jiménez, Regional Minister of Transport. “This improvement will mean a more efficient service adapted to the island’s tourist and business activity, which continues on weekends and holidays.”
A €4 Million Investment in Sustainable Transport
The fleet expansion represents a €4 million investment by Arrecife Bus SL. The new buses are low-emission hybrids outfitted with cutting-edge safety and accessibility features, including Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), rearview cameras, driver breathalyzers, protective screens, and modern fleet management systems.
They also feature Hanover’s HTC system, offering audio and visual signaling adapted for passengers with special needs, making the transport service more inclusive.
“This investment strengthens the island’s intercity transport service, making it both more efficient and more environmentally friendly,” said María Cabrera, operations director at Arrecife Bus.
The announcement marks a major step forward in Lanzarote’s commitment to modernizing its public transport infrastructure while reducing its environmental footprint.
