After a few days of intense calima, the rain will pour over the Canary Islands to wash away the sand that loomed over the archipelago persistently in what was seen as an event of significant proportions.

Rain forecast

The heavy rain warning in place for today, Monday, January 17th, is valid for all the islands except for Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, where the rain will not come in such large quantities.

The highest amount of precipitation will be recorded in Tenerife, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro, with 60 mm accumulated, while in Gran Canaria it is estimated at 50 mm of accumulated precipitation.

Wind

The orange warning for high winds announced by Aemet for the islands of Tenerife, La Gomera and Tenerife has started already on Sunday night, while in the rest of the islands the wind will be less intense, although high winds could affect the mountainous areas of Gran Canaria.

Last night, the wind reached speeds of 80km/h in Frontera (El Hierro) and 72 km/h in Vallehermoso (La Gomera), with maximum speeds of wind gusts of 118 km/h in Frontera (El Hierro) and 112 km/h in Arure (La Gomera).

The wind was also intense in Tenerife in the areas of Ravelo, Tacoronte, Santa Ursula, while Bajamar has been affected by power outages several times during the night.

A few incidents were reported in Tenerife, where trees have fallen and waste containers have moved due to the wind, although no human injuries have been announced.
