New Alert Levels in the Canary Islands: Tenerife is the only island on Level 3

The Government of the Canary Islands has announced new levels or alert for the archipelago, which will come into force from midnight on the 11th of January (Monday) and will remain in place until January 24 (Sunday included), although they will be reviewed next week.

Gran Canaria and Lanzarote go to alert level two due to their upward trend

What changes?

  • Curfew from 11 pm to 6 am.
  • Limitation to only 4 people who can meet in one place.
  • These restrictions will be maintained for 14 days.
  • The capacity of terraces and restaurants is also reduced and the closing time is brought forward.
  • Sports practice also drops from 6 to 4 people.
  • Visits to hospitals and social and health centers are limited.
  • Capacity in public transportation is reduced to 50%.

The Governing Council agreed in its session on Thursday, January 7, new measures to contain the virus, that will be applied from 00:00 hours on January 11 (Monday), once the validity of the specific and extraordinary restrictions approved on December 23 for the Christmas holidays expire. 

Alert levels depending on the epidemiological situation of each island 

By islands, Fuerteventura, La Palma and El Hierro remain at an alert level 1, although each of them has experienced an unfavorable evolution in some aspects.

Gran Canaria and Lanzarote go to alert level 2, due to an upward trend in the indicators that make it necessary to raise the alert level La Gomera remains at alert level 2.

Tenerife remains at an alert level 3 although its upward trend in cases has been contained after the more restrictive measures imposed in December.

Restrictions for Alert level 3 (Tenerife)

The restriction on the entry and exit of people in Tenerife is maintained, except for justified causes which are mentioned in article 6 of the Royal Decree 926/2020, of October 25.

Curfew from 10 pm

At alert level 3, the curfew is in place between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m. every day, except for essential activities included in article 5 of Royal Decree 926/2020, of October 25, such as the acquisition of medicines and health products in pharmacy offices; assistance to health centers, services and establishments: assistance to veterinary care centers for urgent reasons and compliance with work obligations; assistance and care of domestic animals or in livestock farms, among others.

Capacity between non-cohabitants in public and private spaces

At alert level 3, the permanence of people both in closed or outdoor spaces for public and private use will be limited to cohabitants, except in hotels and restaurants and respecting the maximum number of four users per table.

Maximum 4 people at a table in restaurants & indoor dining is prohibited

At alert level 3, the number of diners per table is maintained at 4 people, the closure to the public before 10 p.m. and the prohibition of service in interior areas.

On terraces, activities that encourage not maintaining interpersonal safety distance or not wearing masks, such as dances, karaoke, etc. are prohibited.

Gaming and betting establishments and premises

At alert level 3, recreational gaming and betting venues will be closed.

Sport practice

The practice of physical and sports activity is prohibited in the interior areas of sports facilities and centers. Physical exercise in the open air can be carried out individually and provided that the interpersonal safety distance of 2 meters can be maintained permanently.

Public transport

In the regular urban and metropolitan public land transport of travelers, on islands in alert levels 2 and 3, their capacity is reduced to 50%. On all the islands, the surveillance of urban land transportation will be reinforced at peak times to avoid crowds. During peak hours, avoid using public transport for non-essential trips. 

Restrictions for Alert level 2 (Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and La Gomera)

Curfew from 11 pm

The freedom of movement of people is limited at night from 11:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. every day.

Capacity between non-cohabitants in public and private spaces

The permanence of groups of people is limited to a maximum of 4 people, except in the case of cohabitants. If the group includes both cohabiting and non-cohabiting people, it will not exceed 4 people.

Maximum 4 people at a table in restaurants 

The number of diners per table is reduced to 4 people and it closes to the public before 11 pm.

On the terraces or other open-air spaces dependent on the establishment, activities that encourage not maintaining interpersonal safety distance or not wearing masks, such as dances, karaoke, etc. are prohibited.

Sport practice

For collective activities in the interior areas of sports facilities and centers where it is not possible to maintain a safety distance of 2 meters permanently, a maximum number of 4 people per group is allowed, including the supervisor.

Public transport

In regular urban and metropolitan public land passenger transport, the capacity is reduced to 50%. Surveillance of urban land transportation will be reinforced at peak times to avoid crowds. During peak hours, avoid using public transport for non-essential or postponed trips. 

Restrictions at Alert level 1 (Fuerteventura, La Palma and El Hierro)

Curfew from midnight

The freedom of movement of people is limited at night from 00:00 to 06:00 every day.

Capacity between non-cohabitants in public and private spaces

The permanence of groups of people is limited to a maximum of 6 people, except in the case of cohabiting, understanding as such the people who reside under the same roof. In the event that the group includes both cohabiting and non-cohabiting people, the group will not exceed 6 people.

Maximum 6 people at a table in restaurants

The number of diners per table is reduced to 6 people and the closure to the public before 00.00 hours. On the terraces or other open-air spaces dependent on the establishment, activities that encourage not maintaining interpersonal safety distance or not wearing masks, such as dances, karaoke, etc. are prohibited.

Sport practice

For collective activities in the interior areas of sports facilities and centers where it is not possible to maintain a safety distance of 2 meters permanently, a maximum number of 6 people per group is allowed, including the supervisor. 

Public transport

Surveillance of urban land transportation will be reinforced at peak times to avoid crowds. During peak hours, avoid using public transport for non-essential trips. It is recommended to increase the frequency of public transport schedules, ensuring adequate ventilation and compliance with preventive measures, which include not eating or drinking and using the mask correctly.
