New mask rules in Spain (and Canary Islands): when you have to wear one and what are the exceptions

After yesterday's announcement, today a new decree was approved by the Council of Ministers regarding the use of masks, which means that mask-wearing outdoors will be once again mandatory in Spain starting from Friday, December 24th.

This new measure was announced yesterday after a reunion between Spain's PM and the Presidents of all the Autonomous communities. 

There was no ending date announced for this measure, although Pedro Sanchez, the Spanish Prime Ministers, said that the measure will be suspended "as soon as possible" when the pandemic can be under control again.

When you need to wear masks in Spain (it applies to adults and kids over the age of 6)

  • In any closed space for public use or that is open to the public
  • In any outdoor space for public use
  • In public transport and passenger stations, cable cars and also in private passenger transport in vehicles of up to
    nine seats, including the driver, if the occupants of passenger cars
    they do not live at the same address. 

Exceptions - situations when wearing a mask is not required

  • During the practice of individual sports activities
  • Outdoors in natural spaces where it is possible to maintain a safety distance of 1.5 m. This includes beaches, mountain trails and you also don't need to wear a mask when sunbathing on the beach or by the pool, as long as the safety distance is respected. 
  • When eating and drinking in bars and restaurants
