Over 1 million foreign tourists visited the Canary Islands in April 2023
While the high season is already over in the Canary Islands, the month of April still brought great results in terms of tourism, as 1,156,001 foreign tourists arrived on the islands, compared to the 1,093,021 who arrived in April 2019, the reference pre-pandemic year.
According to Turismo de Islas Canarias, the German market is already showing good signs, with 244,436 Germans having visited the Canaries in April 2023, almost 17,000 more than in the same month of 2019. Without a doubt, this is one of the best news the Canary Islands could receive as far as tourism is concerned, the fact that its second most important market has recovered, a market that less than half a year ago suffered intensely from the economic turmoil derived from the war in Ukraine.
The Canary Islands received 18% fewer German tourists in 2022 compared to 2019, while the month with the most German tourists in 2022 was exactly the month of April.
As for the UK, it continues to be the archipelago's most important market, with 461,533 British visitors in April 2023, 7.2% more than in April 2019.
Other markets that have increased in terms of visitor numbers considerably are the Netherlands, Ireland, Italy and Switzerland. However, the Nordic countries, traditionally very important in the archipelago, have significantly decreased their numbers, except for Denmark, which maintains the same numbers. With 34% fewer tourists coming from Sweden stands out, as well as Finland, with less than half the usual number of tourists for this time of year.
In total, the Canary Islands received 4,937,189 foreign tourists in the first four months of the year, compared to the 4,762,843 it received the last year before the pandemic, which means over 200,000 more foreigners sinc the start of the year compared to 2019.
