Rainy weekend expected in the Canary Islands and yellow warning for wind activated
Aemet (The State Meteorological Agency), announced today that there are increased chances of rain in the Canary Islands archipelago this weekend, due to an Atlantic front and the rise of a DANA (Isolated Depression at High Levels), a meteorological phenomenon that is specific to the Iberic Peninsula and the Mediterranean.
Friday forecast - 18 February
On Friday strong winds of up to 70 km/h are expected to happen on the summits of La Gomera and El Hierro, as well as the other mountainous islands.
In the north and interior areas of the islands with high altitudes, cloudy intervals are expected, with a low probability of weak and occasional rains.
Temperatures will slightly decrease, with a bigger drop in La Palma compared to the rest of the archipelago.
Saturday forecast - 19 February
On the mountainous islands, the weather on Saturday will be characterized by cloudy intervals, with probable widespread rains, especially in Tenerife and La Palma.
In the case of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, Aemet predicts cloudy intervals with little probability of weak and occasional rains.
The maximum temperatures will continue to be in a slight decrease, while the minimums will stay about the same.
Northeast wind will intensify during the second half of the day, especially in the peaks and midlands of the higher islands.
Yellow warning for wind and strong waves in La Palma and Lanzarote
Aemet has also activated the yellow alert for wind and strong waves for the islands of La Palma and Lanzarote.
In La Palma, both alerts will be in place all day on Saturday, with wind gusts of up to 70 kilometers per hour expected on the western slopes.
In the case of Lanzarote, the only alert in place will be the one for strong waves (coastal events) and it will be active on Saturday from 9:00 p.m. and until on the same day at 11:59 p.m. Waves of four to five meters are expected during this interval.
