Record for Tenerife: 58.3 million euros in 2021 generated by movie productions

The president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, highlights that "the island is consolidated as a top destination for international audiovisual filming after the situation caused by the pandemic in 2020".

The 190 productions in 2021 generated for Tenerife a revenue of 58.3 million euros and over 8,500 jobs

Tenerife hosted a total of 190 productions in 2021 that generated more than 8,500 local jobs and a revenue of 58.3 million euros. This data represents, according to the president of the Cabildo de Tenerife, Pedro Martín, "a new record and doubles the 28.8 million euros in investment registered in 2018, the year with the best record so far".

The president highlighted the jump that has been made in the number of audiovisual productions located on the island, with a total of 190, which represents 24% of the figure for 2019, which had been the best year in terms of volume of production up to that point, with 153 productions. As a whole, audiovisual productions totaled 1,207 days of filming in Tenerife in 2021, compared to 443 in 2020 or 750 in 2019.

Likewise, he emphasized the number of jobs generated, with the hiring of 3,511 qualified jobs, related to technical and artistic personnel and 5,057 extras, compared to the 1,187 and 320 hirings registered the previous year, according to data from the Tenerife Film Commission.

During his speech, Pedro Martín alluded to the significant growth in the number of companies associated with the Tenerife Film Commission, which in the last year has grown by 12%, up to a total of 85 companies. 

Laura Castro, representing the Tenerife Film Commission, emphasized the importance of the work carried out by their institution, in coordination with the local businesses, and announced that "in 2022 their budget has been increased by 20% compared to 2021, up to a total of 400,000 euros".

In relation to the economic balance, the island director highlighted "the good results obtained in animation, the activity that best resisted the pandemic within the audiovisual sector and that in 2021 generated an investment in Tenerife of 15.1 million euros, which represents an increase of 60% compared to 2020". In total there are 8 animation companies that are installed on the island and that currently generate more than 300 jobs.

For his part, the CEO of the Tourism Board i  Tenerife, David Pérez, valued "the degree of professionalization of local companies that increasingly occupy positions of command or great responsibility within productions", like it was the case with Crossfire, an international series where a large part of the team was local.

Spain was the main territory of origin for these productions, with a total of 70, of which 36 correspond to local shoots. 48 productions came from Germany and another 48 from the rest of the European Union. From the United Kingdom, 14 projects opted for filming on the island, while from the USA there were 10 productions filmed in Tenerife.

Some of the notable titles filmed in 2021 in Tenerife are: La Casa de Papel (Money Heist on Netflix), Foundation, a Skydance TV production for Apple TV+, and Crossfire, a miniseries that BBC Studios co-produces with RTVE.

Among the car advertisements shot in Tenerife are the ones for Dacia Duster, a French production, and also for Volkswagen ID.4 GTX, by Sur Film.

The growth in the number of music videos shot raised to 11, attracting stars such as Shakira, who recorded Don't Wait Up for Sony Music Entertainment in Tenerife.

Tenerife also hosted the filming for a total of 23 non-fiction television programs, including three international reality shows like Love Island Season 5 Winter, Love Couples - both productions for ITV Germany - and Ex On The Beach, for MTV in the Netherlands.
