Spain issues new 2 Euro coins showcasing Garajonay National Park in La Gomera

The National Currency and Stamp Factory (FNMT)  in Spain has issued a number of one million 2 Euro coins which are classed as a collector's items, depicting an image of Garajonay National Park in La Gomera, Canary Islands. 

There are two commemorative coins that are put in circulation in Spain in 2022. The first one commemorates the first circumnavigation in history and it reproduces the image of a globe and the image of Juan Sebastián Elcano.

The second two-euro coin reproduces the image of the Garajonay National Park, a protected natural area located on the Canary Island of La Gomera and which is considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

These two versions of the two-euro coins have been issued and put into circulation since March 23.

How can you get one of these newly minted 2 Euro coins in Spain?

The coins can be obtained at any branch of the Bank of Spain, but it seems that you would need to make an appointment first. 

One person can get a maximum of 50 coins per day and it seems that these of coins are especially popular with the public in the Canary Islands, since they are showing an image from the Canarian archipelago.

Spain has been paying homage to places declared as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO for 12 years and it is not the first time that an image from the Canary Islands has appeared in one of these special currencies.

The most popular bill in the archipelago used to be the 1,000-peseta bill, which depicted Benito Pérez Galdós and Teide, a fact that many guides will tell you during your tours around Teide National Park.

Other places in the Canary Islands that will appear on the Euro coins are La Laguna in 2040, Teide in 2049 and Risco Caído in 2057.
