In May 2024, Spain's Aena airport network achieved an all-time record for passenger numbers, aircraft movements, and cargo, continuing the upward trend seen since the beginning of the year and most of last year.
Aena airports saw 28,287,870 passengers in May 2024, marking an 11% increase from May 2023. Aircraft movements totaled 238,062, up 10.6% from last year, while cargo reached 108,380 tonnes, a 23.7% increase.
Of the total passengers in May, 28,237,562 were commercial: 19,609,240 traveled on international flights, up 13.1% from May 2023, and 8,628,322 on domestic flights, a 6.7% increase.
From January to May 2024, Aena airports handled 114,708,138 passengers, up 11.4% from 2023, with 983,770 aircraft movements (+8%) and 502,743 tonnes of cargo, an 18.4% increase from the same period last year.
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport led with 5,680,291 passengers in May, a 12.4% increase from last year. This was followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 4,992,580 passengers (+11.5%), Palma de Mallorca with 3,841,241 (+12.3%), Málaga-Costa del Sol with 2,378,119 (+10.5%), Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández with 1,749,487 (+16.6%), Gran Canaria with 1,094,567 (+9.6%), and Ibiza with 1,030,938 (+6.2%).
In May, 23 airports set new passenger records, including Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, Palma de Mallorca, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, Gran Canaria, Ibiza, Valencia, Tenerife Sur, Sevilla, César Manrique-Lanzarote, Bilbao, Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna, Fuerteventura, Menorca, Santiago-Rosalía de Castro, Asturias, La Palma, San Sebastián, Melilla, El Hierro, La Gomera, and Badajoz.
Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas had the most aircraft movements in May with 36,348 (+9% from 2023), followed by Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat with 31,593 flights (+10%), Palma de Mallorca with 27,103 (+11.1%), Málaga-Costa del Sol with 16,346 (+7.3%), Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández with 11,019 (+14.6%), and Gran Canaria with 10,840 movements (+10.5%).
In May 2024, 17 airports achieved record operations, including Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat, Palma de Mallorca, Málaga-Costa del Sol, Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández, Gran Canaria, Ibiza, Tenerife Norte-Ciudad de La Laguna, Sevilla, Tenerife Sur, César Manrique-Lanzarote, Jerez de la Frontera, Menorca, Santiago-Rosalía de Castro, Córdoba, La Palma, Son Bonet, and Logroño.
Gran Canaria is the busiest airport in the Canary Islands with 6.4 million passengers, followed by Tenerife South (5.8 million), César Manrique-Lanzarote (3.5 million), Tenerife North, and Fuerteventura, which ranks fifth.
