Tenerife to add 249 new buses, most of them hybrid, to its public transport fleet
These new vehicles, of which 70% are hybrids, will arrive in Tenerife between 2024 and 2025 and will make it possible to renew the fleet that is more than 10 years old.
The Board of Administration of Interurban Transport of Tenerife (Titsa), a public company dependent on the Cabildo de Tenerife, has awarded the contract for the purchase of 249 buses, of which 70% are hybrid, for a total of 88.42 million euro. These vehicles will be received throughout 2024 and 2025 and will allow the fleet to be expanded and all intercity vehicles over 10 years old to be renewed.
The first vice president and president of Titsa, Enrique Arriaga, assures that "this purchase represents an advance for Titsa since it will allow it to have its own vehicles and put aside the leasing regime that existed until now for many units of the fleet ” and emphasizes that in this way “we will also achieve that all the buses of the company are adapted for people with reduced mobility”.
On the other hand, Arriaga points out that thanks to this investment, "a significant reduction in CO2 emissions and savings in fossil fuel consumption will be achieved thanks to the hybrid technology of the new vehicles" and explains that "hybrid buses use two types of energies to function, on the one hand, they have an internal combustion engine, and on the other, they have one or more electric motors. In this way, it is estimated that the decrease in consumption is around 30%”.
The insular director of Mobility and Vice President of Titsa, José Alberto León, indicates that "during the year 2024 a total of 145 units will arrive, among which there will be 6 long-distance interurban buses, 18 interurban vehicles of 15 meters, 45 of the interurban of 13 meters, 25 suburban units of 13 meters, 20 of interurban of 11 meters, 7 suburban buses of 11 meters, 14 articulated suburban buses of 18 meters and 10 microbuses. The remaining 104 units will arrive in 2025”.
