Three beaches in Gran Canaria were temporarily closed on Sunday due to shark sightings.

The beaches of Melenara and Salinetas in Telde were the first to be closed around midday as a precautionary measure. Later in the afternoon, around 3:00 PM, San Agustín beach in San Bartolomé de Tirajana was also closed after a shark sighting was confirmed.

The initial sighting in San Agustín was reported by a beachgoer from the San Agustín Balcony area and was later confirmed by the Red Cross staff during an inspection round. As a precaution, the local council decided to prohibit swimming at the beach.

There was uncertainty about whether the shark seen in San Agustín was the same one that had caused concern at the Telde beaches the previous day. However, local police in Telde, using drone surveillance, confirmed that a second shark, a hammerhead shark, was spotted near Melenara beach in the afternoon.

Despite these alarming events, the Telde local government decided to reopen Melenara beach to the public on Sunday. This decision came after it was confirmed that the shark, which had approached the coast on Saturday, had left the area.

Council members María Calderín and Miguel Rodríguez assured the public that there was no longer any danger for swimmers. Local police, Civil Protection, and Proactiva (the company providing lifeguard services in the municipality) continue to work together to ensure that the shark does not return to the shore.

For now, the beaches have been deemed safe, and residents and tourists can once again enjoy the beautiful shores of Gran Canaria.
