A 60-year-old man lost his life on Monday after being swept into the sea along with two others by a large wave near the natural pool of Isla Cangrejo in Los Gigantes, Santiago del Teide municipality, Tenerife, according to reports from 112 Emergency Services.

The man was rescued by a helicopter from the Canary Islands Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) with the assistance of a lifeguard and a Salvamento Marítimo boat. Despite efforts to save him, he was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead.

The other two individuals, who were also dragged into the water, managed to return to shore on their own. One of them, a 50-year-old woman, sustained minor injuries to her lower extremities and was taken to a health center for treatment. The other person suffered an anxiety attack but did not require medical assistance.

Emergency services were alerted to the incident at 11:55 a.m. when they received reports that three people had been swept into the sea by a wave and were struggling approximately 30 meters from the shore.

The rescue operation involved multiple agencies, including the Tenerife Firefighters Consortium, the GES rescue helicopter, beach lifeguard services, the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) with both basic and advanced life support ambulances, local medical staff, Salvamento Marítimo, the local police, and the Civil Guard.

The GES helicopter crew located the 60-year-old man in the water, retrieved him, and transported him to a nearby football field. Medical personnel from SUC confirmed that he was in cardiac arrest despite resuscitation efforts by the rescue team and pronounced him dead at the scene.
