On September 27, 2024, at 12:34 PM, a tragic incident occurred at Playa del Inglés in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Gran Canaria. A 67-year-old woman was rescued from the water showing clear signs of drowning.
The Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Center (CECOES) 112 received an alert reporting that a swimmer had been pulled from the water unconscious. In response, CECOES activated a range of emergency services, including two ambulances (one basic life support and one advanced life support) and a medical helicopter from the Canary Emergency Service (SUC). Primary care emergency personnel, including a doctor and nurse, were also dispatched, along with the Red Cross and the National Police.
Upon the initial assessment by Red Cross personnel stationed at the beach, the woman was found to be in cardiac arrest. They immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) while awaiting the arrival of the medical teams from SUC and Primary Care, who continued with advanced resuscitation efforts. Despite their best efforts, the medical teams were unable to revive the woman, and her death was confirmed at the scene.
The National Police opened an investigation into the incident.
