Canary Islands heatwave: Red alerts issued in Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote
The Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands, through the General Directorate of Public Health, activated several red, orange and yellow alerts in different municipalities in the archipelago.
The Canary Islands are preparing for the arrival of an African air mass that will begin to affect the Archipelago starting on Wednesday, August 9. As announced by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), this heatwave will last for several days and it will lead to a progressive rise in temperatures across the archipelago.
Red notices have been issued for several municipalities on the islands of Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, Tenerife and La Palma due to the forecast of high temperatures from August 9th and at least until the 13th of August, depending on the evolution forecasts for the next few days.
GRAN CANARIA: From August 9 and at least until August 13, 2023
- Red notice: Agüimes, Artenara, Ingenio Mogán, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Aldea de San Nicolás, Santa Lucía de Tirajana, Santa Brígida, Tejeda, Valsequillo and Vega de San Mateo.
- Orange notice: Telde and Valleseco (11 to 13 August).
- Yellow warning: Teror (August 11).
LANZAROTE: From August 10 to 13, 2023.
- Red notice: San Bartolomé and Tías.
- Yellow warning: Arrecife (August 11 and 12).
FUERTEVENTURA: From the 10th to the 13th of August.
- Red notice: Antigua, Betancuria and Tuineje (August 11-13).
- Orange notice: La Oliva.
- Yellow notice: Puerto del Rosario (August 11 and 12).
TENERIFE: From the 10th to the 13th of August.
- Red notice: Adeje, Arona, Fasnia, Granadilla, Guía de Isora, Güimar, San Miguel de Abona and Vilaflor.
- Orange notice: Arafo, Arico, La Orotava (11 to 13 August).
- Yellow warning: Santiago del Teide (August 11 and 12).
LA PALMA: From the 11th to the 13th of August.
- Red notice: Los Llanos de Aridane, El Paso.
- Orange notice: Fuencaliente and Tazacorte (August 11 to 13).
- Yellow warning: Breña Alta (August 11 and 12).
Temperature thresholds and risk levels
The temperature thresholds established in 2023 are 33 degrees Celsius for the province of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, and 34 degrees Celsius for the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
