Canary Islands rank as second most visited region of Spain in 2023 so far
Spain received the visit of 8.2 million international tourists in May, 18% more than in the same period of 2022 and 4% more than in May 2019.
These figures represent, for the second consecutive month, a historical record in the number of visitors, and also in spending volume: 9.73 million euros, 21% more than a year ago, according to data published today by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
In the first five months of 2023, Spain had almost 30 million arrivals (29.2 million), which represents a growth of 28% compared to last year.
Growth registered in the average holiday spending
The average expenditure per tourist in the month of May stood at 1,183 euros, with an annual increase of 3%. For its part, average daily spending also increased by 11.6% compared to a year ago, up to 185 euros.
The majority length of stay among tourists in May is four to seven nights.
IUK remains the main source country for tourists, with more than 1.8 million tourists, representing 22.2% of the total and an increase of 10.4% compared to May 2022.
France and Germany are the next countries with the most tourists visiting Spain. France contributes 1.2 million (24.1% more in annual rate) and Germany almost 1.1 million (8.7% more).
Among the rest of the countries, it is worth noting the annual growth of tourists from the United States (38.8%), Portugal (26.2%) and Belgium (19.6%).
Most visited regions in Spain
The Balearic Islands were the first main destination for tourists in May, representing 21.9% of the total, followed by Catalonia (21.8%) and Andalusia (14.7%).
In the first five months of 2023, the communities that receive the most tourists are Catalonia (with almost 6.1 million and an increase of 37.5% compared to the same period in 2022), the Canary Islands (with almost 5.9 million and an increase of 21.0%) and Andalucía (with almost 4.4 million, and an increase of 31.7% compared to 2022).
