Unusually high temperatures for the month of April expected in the Canary Islands this week

On Monday, the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) issued an advisory regarding an upcoming period of unusually high temperatures for this time of year in the Canary Islands.

In the coming days, the arrival in the Canary Islands of a mass of warm, dry air, of African origin, will give way to an episode of exceptionally high temperatures for this time of the year, which may even exceed 34 °C in some areas of the archipelago.

Aemet notes that this air mass will carry abundant Saharan dust, resulting in a steady and significant uptick in temperatures reminiscent of summer weather conditions. The impact will be felt initially in the highlands, gradually spreading towards coastal areas.

The surge in temperatures will start to note starting from Wednesday, April 10, being felt more in the eastern islands, while the western islands will see a moderate increase in terms of temperatures.

Temperatures are forecasted to range between 30ºC and 32ºC on the southern and western slopes of Gran Canaria, as well as inland areas of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.

The heatwave will extend to Santa Cruz de Tenerife province from Thursday onward. Aemet predicts widespread maximum temperatures above 30ºC due to the warm air mass, strong winds, and abundant sunshine. In certain regions, temperatures could even soar to 34ºC, notably in the interior and southern regions of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, the southern half of Gran Canaria, south and northeast Tenerife, south La Gomera, El Hierro's south, and southwest La Palma. However, coastal areas shielded by the cooling influence of trade winds are expected to experience slightly lower temperatures.

This weather situation is anticipated to persist with minimal changes until at least Sunday, with a significant cooldown expected from Monday, April 15. Nonetheless, isolated areas may still experience temperatures reaching 30ºC, potentially marking the end of this heatwave unless conditions shift, possibly on Tuesday, April 16.
