Fuerteventura General Hospital performed its first vascular surgery bypass
The General Hospital of Fuerteventura, a center attached to the Health Department of the Government of the Canary Islands, recently carried out the first bypass in the area of vascular surgery.
This surgical intervention was carried out in collaboration with specialists from the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Service of the Complejo Hospitalario Universitario Materno Infantil de Gran Canaria and represents an important advance in healthcare in Fuerteventura and reinforces the commitment of the local Health Services Management for innovation in the field of Vascular Surgery.
Bypass in Vascular Surgery is a highly specialized intervention that involves the creation of a shunt (with a synthetic or biological substitute) to re-establish blood flow in an artery, generally obstructed, totally or partially, by arteriosclerotic disease. This technique makes it possible to restore adequate circulation and alleviate the symptoms associated with vascular diseases of ischemic origin.
The close collaboration between the managements of both hospitals has been decisive when it comes to having an increasingly broad coverage of patients in Fuerteventura with diseases of vascular origin.
In fact, as in other specialties such as thoracic surgery or neurosurgery, the General Hospital in Fuerteventura has the presence of a vascular surgeon from Gran Canaria who consults regularly and performs vascular interventions such as varicose vein surgery and vascular access procedures for hemodialysis, thus avoiding the displacement of patients and their families to Gran Canaria, which results in a better quality of life for patients.
The upcoming opening of the Hemodynamics room of the General Hospital of Fuerteventura will mean an important advance both for the performance of both diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac catheterizations (placement of coronary stents) as well as endovascular interventions that will be carried out by vascular surgeons coordinated by the Angiology and Vascular Surgery Service of the Insular-Maternal and Child University Hospital Complex.
Both interventions, as well as the mentioned bypass surgery, will contribute positively to avoiding many displacements of patients and family members and to a considerable reduction in waiting lists.
