The Data Center of the Cabildo of Lanzarote, directed by Minister Ascensión Toledo, has just published the report “Lanzarote in figures 2023”, a bilingual publication, aimed at the general public, which collects a global vision with statistical information about the island in aspects such as population, society, tourism, employment, economy or the environment.

This report is an annual document that serves to find out the latest indicators on the island of Lanzarote, a work that has been valued very positively by the counselor herself. “It is impossible to decide what actions to take and, consequently, what direction to take for the future of the island, if we do not know the real situation from which we start. And this report gives us a snapshot of objective facts and figures to work with. In that sense, I want to congratulate the entire Data Center work team for their work,” stated Ascensión Toledo.

Almost 3,000 more inhabitants than in 2022

As reflected in the document, the island has a legal population of 159,021 inhabitants, almost three thousand more than the previous year. In this regard, it must be said that in this last year, the number of inhabitants has increased significantly again, after the stabilization that had occurred since 2020. In addition, another population aspect to highlight is that 23% of Lanzarote's residents are of foreign nationality, mainly British, Colombians, Italians, Moroccans and Germans.

The publication dedicates a section to economic and employment indicators, all of which show an improvement compared to the previous year. In 2023, the number of companies increased by 2% and the growth in Social Security affiliations was 5%. Likewise, the number of unemployed people decreased by 11%, reaching the figure of 7,923 unemployed people.

The document also includes the main tourism indicators, in which there were also substantial increases compared to the previous year. Thus, throughout 2023, 3.1 million tourists arrived in Lanzarote (half of them from the United Kingdom), the accommodation establishments registered an occupancy of 85% and brought to the island an income of 873 million euros, which represented an increase of 18% in respect to the previous year.

César Manrique Airport: 8.2 million passengers in 2023

In addition, “Lanzarote in figures 2023” has a section dedicated to transport, highlighting the record number of 8.2 million passengers who passed through Lanzarote airport. Likewise, merchandise traffic by sea recorded a statistical behavior similar to that recorded in 2019, the year before the pandemic.

The document also offers information on how data has evolved in social aspects on the island, among which the rebound in crime indicators and a decrease in gender violence crimes stands out.

The last section includes figures relating to energy, water consumption, waste and CO2 emissions, with an increase in all of these aspects in 2023.

The publication “Lanzarote in figures 2023” can be downloaded free of charge from the Cabildo Data Center website (www.datosdelanzarote.com) where you can also consult in depth the details of these statistics and many others, as well as all the statistics and more than two thousand documents about the island.
