Ryanair announced this week the opening of eight new routes from Tenerife South airport for the summer season that will connect the island with new destinations in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Hungary.

The details have been presented at a press conference by the vice president of the Cabildo and Minister of Tourism, Lope Afonso; the CEO of Tourism of Tenerife, Dimple Melwani, and the country manager of Ryanair for Spain, Elena Cabrera.

Specifically, Tenerife will have new connections with Marrakech (Morocco), Budapest (Hungary), Toulouse (France), Pisa (Italy), Memmingen and Dusseldorf (Germany), Knock (Ireland) and Cardiff (Wales).

Cabrera has indicated that there will be two new aircraft based at the Tenerife South base, with an investment of 400 million, and has pointed out that the new routes will generate about 60 direct jobs and help maintain another 4,000.

The Irish airline hopes to bring about five million passengers to the Canary Islands this summer and in the schedule corresponding to Tenerife North, the same routes are maintained – six – but with an increase in frequencies of 2%.

He has also indicated that reservations for the summer “are going very well” in Tenerife, 10% above the company's average and the new routes from Tenerife South come out with a starting price of 29.99 euros.

Afonso has pointed out that connectivity “is fundamental for a destination” and Ryanair's “doubled commitment” will “confirm and improve” the 2023 tourism data, also with the advantage of being “committed” to environmental sustainability since 75 % of its aircraft are more sustainable.

The vice president has also recognized that “the way of traveling evolves” and there is an increasingly “broader” profile of travelers who choose to look for cheaper air tickets to spend more at the destination, a thesis that he supported by the fact that last year, the greatest growth in tourist spending in the history of the island, it was also the one with the greatest increase in passengers coming with 'low cost' flights.
